The International Learning Center in a beautiful Landscape in Feldafing, with its views across Lake Starnberg, is no longer up to date. Built in 1972 and refurbished over the years, the existing conference centre no longer meets today’s requirements for training and further education. The concept for the new building is based on the idea of using a building that is integrated in the landscape to create an antithesis to the urban building of the new Headquarters in the centre of Munich. The special relation to the landscape determines as genius loci the dichotomy between the inspiration for the joint work and the peace needed to draw strength.
Around the central core are grouped modular, organically formed building segments that are oriented on the surrounding landscape. Whereas the conference zones as well as gastronomy with access to the external areas are situated at the heart of the ground and first floors, the hotel rooms follow the topography of the site and are located in the storeys below these. Working with sustainable and local materials, starting with clay from Lake Starnberg and wood from forests in the region, plus hybrid building styles as well as striking landmarks such as the cooper roofs of the region’s church towers, is also in context here. The sustainability concept assumes the use of regenerative energy sources. The aspiration is a certification in LEED Platinum.
